How Testers Travel TIME for Test Data Management Solutions

Test Data Management solution is a popular solution to manage your test data. A common task is to create test data based on your production data regularly, and in many cases, the test data needs to be "cleaned" or "masked" for security reasons so that sensitive information, such as social security numbers, name, address, etc. are transformed with different data and the original data is not visible to testers or anyone who has access to the test systems. Test data management solution could automate such test data generation processing, and even maintenance the masking rules across multiple data sources so that the same data field in different data sources would be translated the same.

In addition, Test Data Management solutions also typically support the concept of the virtual data base, with compression and delta technology. As a result, only a fraction of storage is required to hold a virtual database and support self-serve capability, where testers can start their own copy of a virtual database without needing to wait for the infrastructure team to create, restart, or shutdown the database.

 

Many Test Data Management solutions also support the concept of versioning, snapshots, or bookmarks. Virtual databases can save multiples of the copy of data based on a snapshot of a particular date/time with a fraction of the storage requirement, the only difference between the previous versions of data need to be stored. For example, testers can save an end of January, end of February, and end of March snapshots and be able to restore any of those snapshots with speed and storage savings in a self-serve faction to test different test cases. This ability to time travel DATA speedily and that’s self-serve is very powerful and productive for testers.

This is half of the story. Testers also need to be able to time travel TIME. For example, the data could be of end of March for quarter-end process testing. However, if today is in April; then the quarterly testing would not occur as it is not yet quarter-end. This capability is self-serve, testers do not need to wait for applications/databases/system administrators to restart or shutdown databases and applications, or change the system clock.
